Dans notre spécialité, l'efficacité thérapeutique est intimement liée à l'évolution des matériels. La direction que prendra l'orthodontie de demain suivra nécessairement celle des fournitures et en particulier des brackets. Le dépouillement des brevets dans ce domaine peut nous apporter des éléments fiables pour préfigurer ce que va être le bracket du futur. Sur 6500 brevets recensés concernant l'orthodontie, plus de 200 concernent des modèles de brackets. Après consultation, il a été possible d'effectuer un classement en trois groupes : celui à faible coefficient de friction, celui concernant les systèmes auto-ligaturants (à fil, à lame, à lame-ressort), et les brackets amovibles. Si les deux premières catégories ont fait l'objet d'une commercialisation internationale, la troisième n'a pas encore été suivie d'une industrialisation.

Abstract

In our specialty, therapeutic efficiency is closely tied to the development of supplies. The direction orthodontics will take in the future will, necessarily, follow improvements in available materials and, especially, in brackets. By closely examining orthodontic patents applied for, I believe I have established a reliable framework for predicting the characteristics of the bracket of the future. Of some 6500 patents I reviewed, more than 200 dealt with models for brackets. After careful analysis, I was able to separate them into three groups: those with a low coefficient of friction, those offering auto-ligating capability (with wire, with clips, with clip-springs) and removable brackets. While the first two categories have been marketed throughout the world, the third has not yet been produced commercially.
