Les anomalies fonctionnelles et en particulier la dysfonction linguale participent à la création et à la conservation des dysmorphoses dento-maxillaires. D'où l'importance de la rééducation de la langue et de la sphère oro-faciale chez l'enfant.

Elle commence par un examen approfondi de la langue, mais aussi des lèvres, du sillon labiomentonnier, des articulations temporo-mandibulaires, de la posture corporelle, au repos et en fonction : déglutition, phonation, ventilation, habitudes nocives. Elle consiste à faire prendre conscience à l'enfant des postures et praxies erronées et à lui donner les moyens de les corriger durablement.

Il est important pour la pérennité du résultat que l'orthodontiste suive les progrès du patient en même temps que le rééducateur, à l'aide d'une fiche d'évaluation appropriée.

Abstract

Functional problems, a lingual dysfunction in particular, play an important role in inducing and maintaining craniofacial abnormalities. This is the reason why lingual and orofacial muscle reeducation, alone or associated with an orthodontic treatment, is so important.

Functional reeducation begins with a thorough examination of the tongue, lips, chin, temporomandibular joints, posture at rest or in action (swallowing, elocution, breathing, parafunctions).

Functional reeducation teach the child how to be aware of bad postures and habits, and how to correct them permanently.

It is important for the long-term stability that, with a progress chart, the orthodontist be able of following patient's improvements during his or her reeducation.
