Qui a inventé... les appareils amovibles ?
Who invented... the removable appliances?
Abstract
During the first century of orthodontic practice, "regulation" of the teeth was operated without the assistance of removable appliances. Not knowing the technique of impression, the practitioner did not have at his disposal any moulage of the arches and was therefore unable to prepare baseplates.
Impression-taking and moulage casting were described by Maury10 in 1833.
Two materials were then employed for prosthesis and also for orthodontics: hippopotamus ivory, and gold. The first removable orthodontic appliances date from 1840. A little later rubber vulcanization was discovered, but vulcanite will be spreading only after 1870.
