Résumé

L'analyse du «Wits» de Jacobson a été critiquée en raison de la difficulté à localiser avec précision le plan d'occlusion fonctionnel. Un nouveau mode de tracé de ce plan à partir des bissectrices des axes des prémolaires (POFb) est proposé. L'orientation de ce plan POFb n'est pas modifiée par la localisation des repères cuspidiens. Le «Wits», mesuré avec cette méthode, appréhende la même réalité céphalométrique que lorsqu'il est évalué sur le plan d'occlusion fonctionnel conventionnel (POF). Quand les prémolaires ont atteint leur position fonctionnelle, l'utilisation du POFb améliore de 55 % la précision de la mesure du «Wits» et le coefficient de reproductibilité entre opérateurs atteint alors 0,97%.

Abstract

Jacobson's "Wits" analysis has been criticized because locating the functional occlusal plane, which is critical to the method, with any degree of accuracy is difficult. We propose a new way of tracing this plane, employing bisectors of the long axes of the premolars (FOPb). The orientation of this plane is not modified by referring to cuspid landmarks. The "Wits" analysis, measured with this technique, confronts the same cephalometric picture that is obtained when it is evaluated with the conventional occlusal plane (FOP). When premolars have erupted into full occlusion, use of the FOPb improves the accuracy of the "Wits" analysis by 55% and ike coefficient of repeatability between operators reaches 0.97%.
