L'émotion esthétique, c'est l'excitation d'une sensibilité par un stimulus. Pour qu'une face puisse jouer ce rôle, elle doit présenter un certain nombre de qualités plastiques lorsqu'elle est au repos, et d'autres qui expriment la vie, lorsqu'elle est animée.

L'orthodontiste doit d'abord apprendre à analyser les facteurs de beauté puis prendre conscience de ce qui pourrait être trop personnel dans ses jugements. Mais sa première responsabilité reste d'assurer la beauté de la denture.

On confond trop souvent la normalité, l'esthétique et la moyenne. Atteindre la normalité est le premier but du traitement orthodontique, créer de la beauté est le supplément espéré, arranger les structures conformément à la moyenne ne présente pas d'intérêt clinique.

Abstract

Esthetic emotion is the excitation of a sensation by a stimulus. In order for a face to be able to act in this way it must have a certain number of plastic qualities in repose and others, which express vivacity, when it is animated.

One of the capabilities that orthodontists must acquire is, in the first place, to be proficient in analyzing the factors beauty is based upon and, while doing so, to understand how their personal preferences might bias their conclusions. But their primary responsibility is to restore the beauty of their patients' dentitions.

Too often they fail to distinguish between normality, esthetics, and the average. To restore their patients' oral cavities to a state of normality is the essential goal of orthodontic treatment; making patients more beautiful is the complementary outcome that all participants in the orthodontic enterprise desire; but merely rearranging oral structures into an average pattern is not a clinical end that any of them are willing to settle for.
