Psychological risks during orthodontic treatment

Abstract
Psychological risks during orthodontic treatment are correlated with two general factors:
1 - The practitioner may, because of his attitude, trigger some risks without knowing it.
2 - Patients may bring with them certain risks cued to their personalities, their degree of psychological maturity, and the context of their familial and social lives.
In this paper all these factors, and many co-factors, are elucidated and substantiated with clinical examples.
Practitioners can prevent their developing and festering in most cases by maintaining a vigilant posture and by establishing positive relationships with their patients. Empathy and transference are the principal agents underlying creation of positive therapeutic relationships.
