Résumé

La lutte contre la douleur, surtout si elle est causée par un acte du praticien, doit faire partie des objectifs thérapeutiques. L'utilisation d'antalgiques constitue une aide précieuse, qui nécessite une bonne connaissance de la pharmacologie afin de choisir le médicament le plus approprié à la situation. Le choix se fait principalement en fonction de l'étiopathogénie des douleurs, des effets indésirables des agents pharmacologiques, de l'état de santé du patient, de l'intensité de la douleur, de l'âge du patient. Une hiérarchie de prescription par paliers successifs permet de guider le prescripteur dans sa démarche. Une prise en charge précoce évite l'installation des douleurs et favorise le retour à un état de santé optimal.

Abstract

Control of pain, especially when it is caused by something the practitioner did, should be one of our therapeutic objectives. To use the enormously helpful analgesics, practitioners need a good understanding of pharmacology so that they can select the most appropriate drug for the situation. That choice should be based on a careful assessment of the idiopathic character of the pain, on the undesirable side effects of some pharmacological products, on the state of the patient's health, on the intensity of the pain, and on the patient's age. Examination of a step-wise hierarchy of prescription drugs can guide the prescribing doctor in his selection. Early intervention will prevent pain from getting established and encourage a return to a state of optimal health.
