Cette revue de la littérature analyse l’évolution de ces outils, leurs performances cliniques, leurs apports dans la pratique quotidienne et leurs limites éthiques et réglementaires. Elle met en évidence comment la combinaison de l’IA et de l’imagerie numérique contribue à une orthodontie dite « augmentée », plus précise, plus reproductible et plus centrée sur le patient. Enfin, les enjeux de formation, de responsabilité clinique et de protection des données sont discutés afin d’encadrer une adoption raisonnée et scientifiquement fondée de ces technologies.

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital photography is profoundly transforming contemporary orthodontic practice. These technologies are no longer limited to documentation or the automation of isolated tasks; they now actively contribute to diagnosis, treatment planning, outcome simulation, and patient communication.

AI enables the automated analysis of cephalometric images, clinical photographs, and 3D models with accuracy that is close to, or even equivalent to that of human experts. Standardized digital photography, when integrated into algorithmic workflows, becomes a true decision-making tool.

This literature review analyzes the evolution of these tools, their clinical performance, their contributions to daily practice, and their ethical and regulatory limitations. It highlights how the combination of AI and digital imaging contributes to so-called “augmented” orthodontics, more precise, more reproducible, and more patient-centered.

Finally, issues related to training, clinical responsibility, and data protection are discussed in order to guide a rational and scientifically grounded adoption of these technologies.
